Karl Bartos’ newly released book has a good deal of info about Kraftwerk’s use of the Synthanorma and also the Triggersumme. Not very detailed, but it’s clear that Karl thinks back very fondly on them, and considers them key to the improvisational production and compositional method of a lot of classic KW albums.

One tidbit – in the 1981 tour, KW used a cassette portastudio (!!) for three backing tracks, with one sync track driving both the Synthanorma and the Triggersumme (trigger sequencer for drums). Karl mentions the poor quality of the tape tracks blending with the high quality of the “live” instruments driven by sequencer.

  • 1. The idea for a sequencer was presented by me to Klaus Schulze, when I met him as a visitor during the Frankfurt Fair. To develop and to build the “prototyp” lasted more than a year.
    2. Edgar Froese ordered one, when we delivered the “prototyp” to Klaus Schulze. Edgar Froese did not have a look at the sequencer.
    3. Two 16-step versions were ordered by Ralf Hütter from Kraftwerk. More technical information: https://www.elektropolis.de/synthanorma.pdf
    4. Not a Tascam Portastudio, but a Fostex 160

  • Sync to tape was only built for the two 16-step-versions for Ralf Hütter.
    Seven synthanorma sequencers were made.
